District Governor, Janet Peirce, visits MKGU Club for Breakfast at OU

District Governor, Janet Peirce, visited the Milton Keynes Grand Union Rotary Club for breakfast on Thursday, 12th August, 2004 at the Open University.

DG Janet explained that she had to achieve a number of goals during her year in office and had selected a number of these as her priorities for the forthcoming period.

The most important was to increase membership. RIBI had set what appeared to be a daunting target, but when this was translated to branch level, the aim appeared to be a more realistic net increase of 2 new members per club.

Janet stressed the importance of Foundation as Rotary's own charity. She saw a link between Membership and Foundation working together to foster relationships between, for example, District and the Alumni.

As 1260 District Governor, Janet has decided not to promote any particular charitable cause this year, but rather to support the RIBI preferred projects.

The RIBI project at home is a partnership with Lifesavers and the overseas project is Hope and Homes, which supports orphans in South Africa and Rwanda as a result of AIDS and genocide. The latter charity appeal was recently featured in a BBC television programme.

However, Janet has particular areas of interest that she wishes to encourage during her year in office. The Family of Rotary is important and individual Rotarians need support from their families which can include help with project activity.

Health concerns, both at home and overseas are of great importance and this can include, for example, water management through the Aquabox scheme. Literacy amongst both children and adults is significant and opportunities exist on the vocational side for volunteers to help in this area both at home and overseas.

The Group Study Exchange has been organised this year with Brazil and in particular District 4420, San Paolo. More details will be published in the near future.

100 years of Rotary will be celebrated in District with four major events. The DG will have an At Home on 5th September organised by Luton Someries. There will be a Centenary Concert in Watford during the actual celebratory week in February 2005. An Ecumenical Service will be held in Luton and on 8th May there will be a Celebration of Youth.

Arrangements for the 1260 District Conference 2005 are still in the process of being finalised. More information will follow in due course. It is still hoped that a party of 100 children will be taken with their carers to Euro Disney, Paris along with some Rotarians. The dates are being re-scheduled to fit in with schooling needs.
