Cheques were presented by Esmé Hopson to three local charities at the breakfast meeting held in the club's temporary venue on Thursday, 19th August 2004. During the refurbishment of the Beale Suite at the Open University, the breakfast was served in the Refectory, but unfortunately proceedings were interrupted when the fire alarm went off and the building had to be evacuated. It was fortunate that the sun was shining on those gathered outside as shown in the above photographs.
Jan Balzanella is the Manager of Victim Support in Milton Keynes. Their main aim is to provide victims of crimes and their families and witnesses in court with appropriate and sufficient information, recognition and support to assist them in dealing with the crimes which they have experienced. The funds provided by Rotary will be used for Project Lighthouse which is particularly involved with violence in the home.
Peter Payne, who attended with his wife Sue, represented ROOF. This charity is involved with providing an orphanage in Romania and Peter explained that this donation will now enable completion of the much needed central heating system for the orphanage.
Yvonne McLaughlin is the local Manager of YIS. The Youth Information Service in Milton Keynes provides a counselling service to young people. The funds raised by MKGU Rotary will support the mobile service for the whole year.
All of the charities represented expressed their thanks to Milton Keynes Grand Union Rotary Club for the financial support that they have received during the past year. These cheques represented the final instalments of the fund raising during Esmé's year of office as Club President.
